SHOWING THIS MONTH...

March 13 – April 5, 2009
The joyful Florence Foster Jenkins had a passion for singing, but a voice of disastrous proportions, which left audiences crying with laughter. Spinning from her bizarre recording sessions, unbelievable recitals, and an ultimate triumph at New York’s Carnegie Hall – this is a true, heartwarming story about a group of eccentric friends who lived their dreams. A glittering comedy with a heart.

This comedy is set in Hollywood in 1939 and inspired by real events. It is a behind-the-scenes account of a collaboration between film producer David O. Selznick, swaggering director Victor Fleming, and script doctor Ben Hecht, as they write the screenplay for “Gone With the Wind.” This one is a Hollywood dream-factory farce, a hyperventilating slapstick comedy. Frankly, my dear, this is a funny play.

This play explodes like twelve sticks of dynamite! Twelve jurors, twelve walks of life, and only two ways to rule - guilty or not guilty. What seems like an open-and-shut murder case becomes a twisted puzzle of prejudice and intrigue. Twelve jurors are corralled in a room for the duration of their deliberation. As prejudices are tested and evidence weighed, the entire jury is forced to look past the show of the courtroom to unearth the shocking truth. Faced with playing the hangman, these dozen men must first face themselves.

SPOTLIGHT ON...
OCP Partners with Film Streams and Lauritzen Gardens
This spring, Film Streams, Lauritzen Gardens and the Omaha Community Playhouse will offer a taste of all things GONE WITH THE WIND.
Now celebrating its 70th anniversary, the classic film starring Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh remains one of the most iconic, popular and staggeringly cinematic motion pictures of all time. From April 17 – 23, the film will return to the big screen at Film Streams’ Ruth Sokolof Theater as part of a special collaboration among the three nonprofit organizations.
Coinciding with the film’s weeklong run at the Ruth Sokolof Theater will be the Omaha Community Playhouse’s production of the slapstick comedy Moonlight and Magnolias (April 17 – May 10). Written by Ron Hutchinson, the play gives a behind-the-scenes account of famed producer David O. Selznick’s ploy to lock himself, director Victor Fleming and script doctor Ben Hecht in a room for five days in order to finish the screenplay for GONE WITH THE WIND.
Both the film and play will be presented in conjunction with an indoor exhibit at Lauritzen Gardens—also titled Moonlight and Magnolias— transforming the floral display hall into a spectacular Southern garden featuring the sights and scents of oleander, gladiola, dahlia, gardenia and, of course, magnolia. The exhibit continues through May 10.
Visitors to all three venues will be able to see GONE WITH THE WIND in its full cinematic splendor at Film Streams’ Ruth Sokolof Theater, experience a hilarious live production about the writing of the movie at the Omaha Community Playhouse, and transport themselves to the time and place of the film’s setting at Lauritzen Gardens.
This collaborative presentation of GONE WITH THE WIND is part of Film Streams’ Community Development Program, which encourages partnerships with other nonprofits and community groups on film-related events that speak to their missions and programming.
